An Empirical Study On The Development And Effect Factors Of Hainan Cassava Industry

Along with the implementation of the 13th Five Year Plan,how to promote the agricultural modernization vigorously and to speed up the transformation of the mode of agricultural development has become one of the focus points.Cassava,as an important economic crop in tropical and subtropical regions,is of an annual output of hundreds of millions of tons.In recent years,with a continuously increasing market demand of modified starch and clean energy,cassava industry has become the second largest tropical crop industry needs to be developed.Yet,it develops rather slowly,even lags behind,when comparing to the development of cassava industry in the entire country.Affected by an unsound industrial development caused by outdated processing technology and unsuitable developing mode,farmers in Hainan are disadvantaged and less motivated.Therefore,based on studies of the development of Hainan cassava industry,this article discusses that,in such a background,how Hainan cassava industry could be developed sound and quickly,and how to improve the income of Hainan farmers.The main contents of this study include an elaborate analysis of,not only the macro background,but also planting production,processing and sales development of Hainan cassava industry.Additionally,this study consults the yearbook by Hainan Provincial Bureau of Statistics,related records from national cassava industry system and the data and results obtained from researches.Furthermore,this study utilizes a research method consisted of field investigation,expert interview,comparative and empirical analysis.Last but not the least,this study raises countermeasures and suggestions by applying Cobb-Douglas(C-D function)to the factors influencing cassava production in Hainan and their correlations with genuine data from 2000 to 2015 such as Hainan cassava planting area,total power of cassava machinery,fertilizer input,labor input,processing capacity(processing gross output),market demand(processed goods imports of China and prices).The results show that the planting area,fertilizer input and processing capacity have a positive impact on cassava production in Hainan.However,currently,factors such as low mechanization degree,labor surplus at origin and weak market competitiveness to some extent hinder the development of the cassava industry in Hainan.
