With the development of economy and society, the contradiction between land and population is more serious and critical, the quantity and structure of land use has changed greatly. Yuhu district of Xiangtan city as the key area of the "Resource-Saving and Environment-friendly" society in Chang-Zhu-Tan urban agglomeration, its urban development surely leads to the change of land use structure. In order to explore the problems of land use in Yuhu district and promote the rational land use, this paper explored the quantitative and spatial change of land use from 2000-2010 in Yuhu district based on GIS, then discussed the driving forces of land use change by combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, finally put forward the countermeasures of sustainable land use aiming at the problems existing. The results show that:(1) Land use change is significant from 2000-2010 in Yuhu district. The grassland, river, construction land and bare land area are increasing except cultivated land and forest land; The scope of the cultivated land reduction and construction land increase is basically the same; The annual change rate of bare land is the largest, followed by grassland. (2) Physical driving forces of land-use-include climate; soil, geology, geomorphy and hydrology. Socioeconomic driving forces of land use include demographic factors, economic development and policy systems. Principal component analysis results show that the economy and society development, population growth, industrial structure adjustment have been the main driving forces of land use change and their influence is increasing year by year. (3) The obvious contradiction between cultivated land and construction land, the intensive degree of land use needs to be improved and land pollution are the main problems of land use in Yuhu district. Finally, the countermeasures, such as protecting cultivated land resources, raising the level of intensive land use, paying attention to ecological security and environmental protection and dealing with the relationship between economic development and land use have been put forward so as to ensure sustainable land use.
