South China Sea is located in the hinterland of Southeast Asia,a special and strategic location, where exists rich oil and gas resources.Since China took over the Spratly Islands from the hands of the Philippines, the US media ignored China's earliest discovery of naming and developing and utilizing the Spratly Islands, including its related waters. The American Army frequently sent aircraft carriers and warships to intervene in the South China Sea issue, resulting in the tensions in the Pacific waters. In the process of foreign media reporting news about South China Sea,the United States monopolizes global voice and promotes China's threat theory, focusing on China's"hegemony" of militarizing the South China Sea,which results in the great pressure from western public opinion."Washington Post" is the most authoritative political newspaper in the United States, which has a huge influence on the circle of the US government elites.I select it as a study of pragmatics,to a certain extent,on behalf of the United States official attitude on the South China Sea issue. As a sub-subject of linguistics, the pragmatics analysis is more from the perspective of language communication and foreign language teaching on domestic academic papers. It researches,in the process of practical communication, the instructions language, mark language, speech acts,Courtesy, meaning understanding, identity and other traditional issues.Pragmatic s,as a language analysis tool,is rarely involved in interdisciplinary research with media texts. Therefore, this paper is willing to make a positive attempt:Combine reports from the mainstream newspapers in the United States and pragmatic analysis,in order to provide a new perspective of pragmatic interpretation about media report. The author, after China carried out the reef reclamation project, pick up"Washington Post" related reports from September 2015 to 2016 nearly a year span diachronic study.Under the cross-cultural pragmatic frame,I try to do a pragmatic analysis from the pragmatic environment and pragmatic significance. On this basis, the method of comparative journalism is used to compare the reports on the South China Sea issue in the same period, and discuss how to focus on the specific context and semantics, interpreting differences between Chinese and western mediareports.Chapter 1 shows the relevant situation of China's South China Sea and its research background. It mainly introduces the related concepts of cross-cultural pragmatics, and analyzes the pragmatic problem of the Washington Post's report on the South China Sea.It draws two cores of cross-cultural pragmatics research-pragmatic environment and pragmatics significance, including research ideas and innovative ideas.Chapter 2 mainly discusses the article of the Washington Post about the South China Sea,and uses the method of quantitative analysis to explore the characteristics and contents of the articles in the Washington Post.Chapter 3 analyzes the specific pragmatic environment of the Washington Post from the perspectives of the context, the context of the situation, and the traditional context of the national culture, from the Washington Post's military report on the South China Sea issue.Chapter 4 applies the speech act and Ideology theory in pragmatics and analyzes the pragmatic meaning of the Washington Post in China's South China Sea,elucidating the meaning of Speech act and Ideology behind reports. The study argues that, through the pragmatic analysis of the South China Sea issuein the Washington Post,we can see that the US media reports news about South China Sea based on its own interests. The United States considers itself as a world police. In order to defend the free trade in Southeast Asia,America must fight with China's"militarization" of the South China Sea,which is "anti-aggression" war from Southeast Asian countries' support. In order to promote the "China threat theory","Washington Post" deliberately selected China's "militarization" of the South China Sea and the relevant facts, and links South China Sea issue to China's human rights, economic issues to discredit China's national image. On the one hand, during the US bipartisan election, the Democratic and Republican candidates, for more votes, have pointed to China where exists a huge trade deficit with America;the other hand, the US government would like to transfer the tension in the Middle East, the strategic focus' pivot to Asia'.In the field of ideological speculation about China's South China Sea,The United States achieves the global hegemony.
