Disaster events take place frequently in 21 st Century. It is obligation of government to properly deal with the outburst of earthquake,tsunami, worldwide contagious disease so on. In the disaster,life and property are threatened and communication system is suspended and traffic tied up.It is the responsibility of mass media to do the jobs, such as disaster information spreading, environment monitoring, social coordinating and public opinion guiding under chaotic atmosphere.A cruise ship with 458 aboard sunk on late June 1 in the Hubei section of China's Yangtze River after countering with a tornado. This event was named the worst painful disaster in the ship history by some media for the dying of 442. Similarly an American cargo ship carrying 33 people overturned in the Bahamas of the Atlantic ocean by hurricane. All of them died in this accident. After comparing the above disasters,the author found that there are many similar factors in them,horrible weather condition,sudden submergence,large number of casualties,mass rescue and extensive attention from the media.This paper adopt the methods of content analysis and comparative study,using the samples of coverage of the capsized event of Eastern star and EL Faro from Xinhua online and CNN online.The author will explore the double standers of American media,represented by CNN,on reporting Chinese disaster and domestic disaster on the basis of textual level.Then,the author will analysis the similarities and difference of the samples by the narrative theory. On this account, the author give some feasible suggestions,for the purpose of improving professional skills on reporting domestic disaster for Chinese journalists.
