China and South Korea are closely connected not only in economy and culture, but also increasingly in education.More and more South Korea primary and secondary schools are establishing sister schools relationship with China counterparts, and each year, the two sides will exchange students to hold friendly interviews in the others' schools, which can accelerate the pace of Chinese language learning entering into Korean primary and secondary schools. To meet the need,Confucius Institute has been sending more Chinese volunteer teachers abroad year on year.I participated in the Confucius Institute's CPIK project in 2015 as a Chinese teacher for two years in the KwangMyong Buk Middle School in KwangMyong,Gyeonggi Do,Korea.Working at the front line of teaching,I found that Chinese characters teaching takes up a very small proportion of Chinese classes in Korea, and some of the schools even have no requirements for teaching Chinese characters, long as the students can master the pronunciation of them.Faced with the lagging Chinese characters teaching progress in Chinese language teaching,I did a targeted survey research on Chinese characters teaching situation in junior high school in Gyeonggi Do district,South Korea.First, through summing up the published journal articles and works on teaching theory on Chinese characters, teaching methods, teaching strategies and teaching research written by domestic and foreign experts,I concluded the domestic and foreign research findings on Chinese characters teaching and the development of Chinese characters teaching in Korea.Secondly, combined with my two years' teaching experience, and through summarizing the questionnaires of Chinese characters teaching and learning designed by current scholars,I designed the questionnaire of Chinese teaching and learning for this paper, which includes Chinese character teaching on teachers' side and Chinese character learning on students' side. There are mainly two parts in the questionnaire of Chinese characters teaching on teachers' side, following the principle of from the general to the detailed. The first part focuses on Chinese teaching,to get a hold of how much importance schools attach to Chinese teaching;the second part focuses on Chinese characters teaching,to get a hold of how much importance teachers attach to Chinese characters teaching, and which methods they have adopted and how is the efficiency. There are mainly two parts in the questionnaire of Chinese characters learning on students' side. The first part focuses on students' Chinese language learning,to get a hold of some basic facts of their leaning conditions;the second part focuses on students' Chinese characters learning,to understand how much attention students pay to the learning of Chinese characters, and the difficulties they have encountered in the process of learning Chinese characters, and the learning strategies they have adopted. Then, according to the survey results,I concluded the existing problems found in current Chinese characters teaching and learning in Korea and where the reasons lie.The problems in the teaching of Chinese characters are: schools and teachers generally attach importance to Chinese teaching, but not to the teaching of Chinese characters;the form of Chinese characters teaching is too traditional, the teaching efficiency is not ideal;the method of teaching and the way of character writing practice are monotonous, which is not conducive in mobilizing students' enthusiasm. The problems in the learning of Chinese characters are: the strategy of "repeated copy" has no ideal result in Chinese characters learning;students are not familiar with the structure of Chinese characters, and they have weak motives and transient impetus in Chinese learning. Finally,I try to find out the causes of the above problems, and by analyzing the causes,I make feasible suggestions on the teaching and learning of Chinese characters in Korean junior high schools.
