On The Literati Spirit Of The Yuan Dynasty Paintings

The Chinese painting is a treasure of Chinese art.In the long course of development of Chinese painting,the paintings of Yuan Dynasty is gleaming and particularly eye-catching.Owing to the special social historical and cultural background,the majority of Yuan dynasty painting culminated literati painting which developed gradually in Song dynasty.The paintings of Yuan Dynasty as a spiritual sustenance of literati are rich in distinct literati spirit It is also derived from the Literati Spirit,that the paintings of Yuan Dynasty can still be so brilliant and fascinating.Studying the Literati Spirit in the paintings of Yuan Dynasty from the perspective of artist is not only aims to dig the intrinsic reason of the painting style in Yuan Dynasty,but also shows the value and pursuit of the literati of Yuan Dynasty comprehensively through a critical understanding of the spirit in the paintings of Yuan Dynasty,and then tries to provide some instruction and inspiration for the current painting creation..This paper is demonstrated mainly in three parts,that is,the introduction,the body(includes four chapters)and the conclusion.The part of introduction mainly includes the general overview of the paintings of Yuan Dynasty and the current research status of this field at home and abroad.The first chapter mainly discusses the concept of "literati" and "Literati Spirit".Firstly,the "literati" concept is combed.It shows a clear evolvement of "literati" form Warring States to now by clarifying the concept of "literati" in different periods.Secondly,the concept of literati gets a further clarity by distinguish the intension of "literati" and "scholar".Last,defines "Literati Spirit" and regard the Tao spirit,life spirit,personality spirit as the main characteristics of the Literati Spirit.The second chapter mainly introduces the social and cultural background of the formation of Literati Spirit in the paintings of Yuan Dynasty.The first section,The Cultural Reflection Under the Rule of Foreign Nation,mainly shows the choice of the literati ofYuan Dynasty under the depressed atmosphere in the scholar group at late Song Dynasty,and the rule of Mongolian nationality.The second section,The Elegant Meetings Under the Relaxed Political Atmosphere,introduces the relaxed political atmosphere of Yuan Dynasty,and the literati gathering in this atmosphere.The third section,The Position Promotion of Literati in Painting Circles,tells the weakness of court painting and the prosperous of literati painting.The third chapter is the main part of this paper,mainly analyses the literati spirit in the painting of Yuan Dynasty from three aspects like Tao spirit,life spirit and personality spirit.The first section——The Tao Spirit in the Painting of Yuan Dynasty,proceeding from the character of literati that showing interest in Tao,introduces the Tao spirit in the painting of Yuan Dynasty from the national emotions of the early Yuan Dynasty painters and the traditional continuation after cultural reflection.The second section——The Life Spirit in the Painting of Yuan Dynasty,introduces the life spirit in the life state of painters,and follows by the introduction of the life spirit in the paintings.The third section——The Personality Spirit in the Painting of Yuan Dynasty,on the one hand,excavates the pursuit of the Yuan Dynasty painter for the natural personality by showing the painters`understanding of moral character and painting quality.On the other hand,shows the pursuit of independent personality through the prosperous of gentleman theme in Yuan Dynasty.The fourth chapter shows the criticism of the literati spirit in the painting of Yuan Dynasty.The first section shows the literatus` desire of being an official by the case study of Wang Meng and Wang Mian.The second section shows the literatus` spectator attitude by exploring the painters` mentality in the gathering of literati in Yu Shan.The conclusion part discusses the realistic significance of the literati spirit in the Yuan Dynasty painting,and proposes the insufficient of this paper and some undeveloped field.
