With the tendency of the ageing of the population, the elderly’s mental health has been paid more and more attention. The elderly have specific material and mental needs due to their special physical, mental and behavioral features. As the increase of the population of the elderly, the consequences of China’s modernization and urbanization and one-child policy are coming out.More and more parents are moving from rural areas to big cities with their children,in order to take care of their grandchildren.Meanwhile, the elderly in urban areas have also switched their conception of parent-child relationship and preference of living structure. Therefore, the elderly have to get well adapted to the development of the society and the change of their living environment with their own initiative and effort as well as family support. This research focused on the relationship between young elderly’s general self-efficacy,mental health status and family support, especially the direct or indirect effect from general self-efficacy to mental health status.Findings of the relationship between young elderly’s participation in learning and mental health were also reported.Based on the study of 262 young elderly people living in Shanghai with GSES,MUNSH,UCLA,CES-D,SAS,PSSS and their backgrounds, the results supported the hypothesis as below:1.Participation in learning was a significant correlate of subjective well-being of young elderly.2.General self-efficacy of young elderly predicted their status of mental health and family support.3.Family support had part of the mediating effect between general self-efficacy and mental health status of young elderly. These results support the role of family support as a mediator between general self-efficacy and mental health status of young elderly, and the role of participation in learning as a correlate of their subjective well-being.It will improve mental health status of young elderly to provide various learning courses and leisure entertainments.
