A Sculpture That Will Perform

Contemporary art can be divided into many categories.Each and every artistic craft increasingly encompasses and communicates with other disciplines.“Surpassing boundaries” is the result of those different disciplines mutual influence on each other,and this influence extends in a wider and wider radius to influence all aspects of mutually related art.The stage art in “Battle Horse”overcomes the boundaries between sculptural art and woodcarving.The style of the wooden marionettes in “Battle Horse” are influenced in no small measure by the West African sculpture of Mali.These marionettes were created as a result of the creative output of the Mali team.This thesis will analyze the relationships between wooden marionettes and sculpture,as well as wooden marionettes and stage art to illustrate “communicative art that overcomes boundaries.” This thesis will show how this kind of art is exemplified in the specific expressive power of the stage art in “Battle Horse”.
