Throughout art history, people and animals have been an important theme of the sculpture. Especially strikingly, the horse occupies a pivotal position in the animal theme sculpture. This paper firstly analyzes the different characteristics of the horse in the Qin, Han and Tang Dynasty. In the comparison between the horses in the tombs of the Terracotta Warriors and horses in the tomb of Huo Qubing in Han Dynasty, we find easily that the shape of the Qin Dynasty horse is a single repetition of modular, using realistic approach to shape one by one. This approach will inevitably lead to mechanical dull impression; while the Han Dynasty horses use partly exaggerated styles, which is very symbolic. Where do these differences in the shape come from? How is the change of people’s aesthetic taste reflected on the shape of horses? The results of the research show that the different shapes of horses in each period will be due to the different cultural and aesthetic consciousness, which results in the consequent change in shapes. The so-called "using symbols to express feelings" means that the creators express their emotions by shaping the horses. Then, the paper uses the time as a clue, analyzes the underlying reasons for the modern Chinese or foreign sculpture artists to create the horse shapes. Finally, this paper reviews the above findings, analyzes the reasons for the author to take horses as the creative source, as well as the experiences in the creation and the characteristics of the work.
