During the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties,TCM pediatrics developed brilliantly. Many doctors not only inherited the experience of their predecessors, but also promoted new ideas. There were five different perspectives on pediatric embryonic development.Doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties classified the physiologic characteristics of children into visceral weakness, especially spleen-stomach weakness, spirit weakness,Yang weakness and Yin weakness.Doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties recognized that infantile feverish perspiration was the development of organs and the process of emotions.According to the cycle of infantile feverish perspiration, there were two kinds of doctrines, one on the thirty-second day and the other on the fifteenth. And there were three different doctrines for the order of infantile feverish perspiration. After infantile feverish perspiration, the viscera function of children gradually tended to the adults. And the nervous system of children also developed after infantile feverish perspiration.Doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties believed that the pathological characteristics of children were simpler than those of adults. At the same time, there were significant differences in the predisposition to diseases between children and adults.Doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties extracted the relevant concept of fetal poison from the fetal diseases and considered it as a pathogenic factors originated from the embryonic period. Many doctors thought that fetal poison had a great relationship with the mothers and it was often caused by maternal constitution and life style in pregnancy.According to the maintenance of children, doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties thought that over-clothing could hurt children and injury Yin and Yang.In terms of complementary foods, doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties had a variety of different opinions on the timing of complementary foods. If too early, the spleen and stomach of children would be injured. If too late, the growth of children would be affected. In terms of diagnosis, doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties developed the pediatric pulse diagnosis methods such as the pulse type and diagnostic significance. In addition, fingerprint diagnosis system and facial diagnosis system had been formatted in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties. In clinical practice, doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties thought that smallpox and measles had the same pathogenic factors. Some doctors believed that it was due to congenital disease and some doctors believed that it was caused by infection. In the treatment, some doctors believed that it should be divided into three stages.Doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties gradually distinguished between chronic infantile convulsion and acute infantile convulsion.Doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties classified infantile malnutrition into many different systems and also realized that the main etiology and pathogenesis of infantile malnutrition was spleen-stomach deficiency.Besides, doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties had researched other common pediatric diseases such as diarrhea and edema. In brief,TCM pediatrics in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties developed on the basis of the previous generation.According to their own clinical practice, many doctors in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties summed up their experience and theories of TCM pediatrics. In the clinic and theory of TCM pediatrics, certain achievements and own characteristics had been made in the Song-Jin-Yuan Dynasties and had promoted the development of TCM pediatrics in the future as well.
