Purposes: To study how Taijiquan, one of the low intensity exercise, affects people's physique, a 12-week intervention study was performed on the research subjects, sixty people with two different types of most common deficiency physique, Yin deficiency type and Qi deficiency type. After the research subjects participated the low intensity exercise(Taijiquan) for 12 weeks, research data was recorded for their changes of TC M physique and body function, to find out if the low intensity exercise benefits people with Yin and Qi deficiency types or which type it benefits more. This study provides t he theoretical basis for people with Yin or Qi deficiency type to promote their wellbei ng through exercise. Meanwhile, it started the preliminary explorations of the establis hment of the theory that exercise benefits people with whichever TCM physique and t he promotion of the guiding principle, exercising according to one's physique while a djusting the physique in return. Methods: In this study, the sample of sixty people was selected randomly from subj ects aged 20-30 who participated the TCM physique identification test in Sichuan Ost eological Hospital and were classified as Yin or Qi deficiency type. The sample was r andomly divided into control and experimental groups. During the Taijiquan exercise, one of the low intensity exercise, the experimental group wore the heart rate monitor t o maintain the low intensity status under surveillance. Three variables, cardio-pulmonary function(the anaerobic threshold oxygen uptake rate VO2), TCM physique score, and the strength of lower limps muscle, were measured and recorded before and after the exercise. Observation, comparison, and analysis of these data showed how the low intensity exercise affects people with Yin and Qi deficiency type in the areas of the T CM physique and related body functions. Results: 1.After 12-week exercise, in the area of physique measuring scale score, research subj ects in control group showed no extinct change(P>0.05), while to some extent researc h subjects in experimental group showed declinations. However, in the experimental g roup, research subjects of Yin deficiency type showed no significant difference(p>0.05), while those of Qi deficiency type showed significant difference(p<0.05). Further more, the ameliorate rate of physique measuring scale score for Yin deficiency type w as 80%, while the rate for Qi deficiency type was 93.3%, which showed that the rate f or Qi deficiency type was better than that for Yin. It indicated that low intensity exerci se works better for Qi deficiency type. In another word, people of Qi deficiency type a re more suitable for low intensity exercise. 2.After 12-week exercise, in the area of cardio-pulmonary function(the anaerobic thre shold oxygen uptake rate VO2), research subjects in control group showed no extinct c hanges. To research subjects in experimental group, subjects of Yin deficiency type sh owed inclining tendency but no significant difference(p>0.05), while subjects of Qi d eficiency type showed extinct inclination and significant difference(P<0.05). It indica ted that low intensity exercise works better for people of Qi deficiency type. In anothe r word, low intensity exercise is more suitable for people of Qi deficiency type. 3.After 12-week exercise, in the area of lower limp strength, research subjects in contr ol group showed no significant difference(p>0.05), while those in experimental group showed inclinations to some extent but no significant difference(p>0.05). It indicated that low intensity exercise improve lower limp strength of people with Qi and Yin def iciency type to some extent. Conclusion: For people of Yin and Qi deficiency type, low intensity exercise is effic ient in improving physique and health, especially for those of Qi. Therefore, people of YCM Yin and Qi deficiency type need to be suggested to choose low intensity exerci se, such as Taijiquan, Taiji sword, Wuqinxi, jogging, etc. Choosing suitable exercise o f appropriate intensity according to medical science could better correct deficient phys ique, adjust physique condition, and improve health status through consistent practice for certain amount of time.
