Research On The Design Of College Student Apartments In South China

As the increase of the enrollment of college students,student dormitories are hard to meet their demands.In this regard,building new dormitories has been become an essential and crucial part of construction of university campus.Colleges and universities in South China enjoy a rapid development in recent years.Besides some time-honored universities,such as Sun Yat-Sen University,South China University of Technology and Jinan University,some emerging universities and outstanding colleges and universities abroad have developed well in South China.Looking ahead,with the improvement of living quality and social development,dormitories with multiplied functions will be needed on the request of students.Functions may include social intercourse,communication,study,recreation,workout and consumption.Thus,the design for dormitories will meet new challenges as well as development space.South China has a subtropical climate featuring scorching heat and humidity,thus making its buildings quite different with those in other regions.Long-term heat and wet are bound to bring about many problems because students spend more time on their dormitories than classrooms.A pressing challenge facing our study is how to design students’ dormitories in order to adapt to local climate.After the investigation on colleges and universities in South China,we find that existing students’ dormitories have many defects in design and most of them are hardly to meet students’ demands for living and self-study.Moreover,students have no choice for house types to meet their personalized requirements because of the unicity of dormitories.This is the second problem.By taking features of local climate and cases of dormitory design of outstanding colleges and universities abroad into consideration,the paper concludes a set of operational design models for students’ dormitory according to four aspects including unit design,combination method,individual design and group design.Meanwhile,the paper considers and explores the growing trend of students’ dormitory in the future,and then puts forward design elements that may have impacts on the design and possible design methods,thus providing references for the design and construction of colleges and universities in South China and nationwide in the future.
