Distance bounding protocol can enable a communication party(termed as verifier)to securely measure physical distance to the other party(termed as prover)in process of authentication for authentication safety. As a security protection mechanism, distance bounding protocol has been widely applied in contactless access control and authentication systems under Internet of things(IoT).Current research mainly focuses on protocol layer authentication. For example, when distance bounding protocol uses round-trip delay for ranging,it encrypts “challenge-response” to the ranging information for enhancing security. However, delay is brought by processing time when prover generates responses.Noting that the processing of challenge and generating of response are both based on synchronization clock, attacker can speed up the synchronization clock which is embedded into the challenge signal to reduce the processing time, and then use the reduced processing time to relay response. Then, the verifier wrongly assumes that the prover locates in the legitimate physical range. This attack is called as clocking attack. In addition, attacker can also exploit bit duration for launching early detect and late commit attacks. In order to improve the security of distance bounding protocol and the applicability to IoT applications.1)This paper proposes a scheme to resist clocking attack by combining checksum of synchronization clock with frequency modulation. In this scheme, the prover feeds back the checksum of synchronization clock by shifting the response signal's frequency, then the verifier uses the checksum to detect whether protocol is under clocking attack or not.Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and the applicability to resisting multipath.2)On that basis,we further propose an improved distance bounding protocol design and implementation. This protocol uses step frequency continuous waves to complete ranging and data transmission,so as to save bandwidth and efficiently resist early detect and late commit attacks.Additionally, this protocol processes challenge and generates response only performing the analog processing at the radio frequency front-end,and uses backscatter to realize communication, makes the processing time reduced virtually to zero. This approach can significnatly improve safety performance and reduce energy consumption. Finally,we conduct extensive simulation on Simulink to verify the feasibility of this protocol. The results show that compared with the state-of-the-art protocols, the new protocol proposed in the paper can achieve higher ranging accuracy, less bandwidth occupation, lower power consumption, stronger anti multipath and noise performance, and much reliable performance against clocking attack.Besides, the new protocol can also efficiently resist early detect and late commit attack.
