Network routing is a kernel network function, which has important effect on the large-scale network interconnection. In the Internet, routing service is provided through routing protocols.Routing protocol is a part of the network architecture, and a specific routing service can only be used in a specific network, which is not flexiable to migrate among a variety of networks and lack of extensibility and independency. From the end users'point of view, the above routing services are transparent because the end users have very little control over the routing process with low ability of customizing, other than providing the essential information(e.g.,destination address). Moreover, the development and deployment of new protocols have high cost, and too much functional redundancy between new and old protocols exists, which not only affects the ability of providing services, but also restricts the ability to extend services.Aimed at improving poor performance of current network routing service in the way of extensibility, this paper has a deep research on the routing architecture and proposes a new extensible routing service model(ERSM),which provides a unified routing solution for routing service problem.ERSM has two extensible levels and provides extensible and flexiable routing service according to end users' requirements.Three basic elements, which are addressing mode, routing table and routing algorithm, are abstracted to establish Meta model(ERSM)of routing service based on the core of network interconnection and principles of modern packet switching and realize typification of routing service models. Thus enhancing the abstraction level of routing service model can make it more flexible and extensible.Furthermore, the extensibility of ERSM is verified through mapping protocols of IP network,CDN and NDN into instances of ERSM.Finally, the related experiments of extensible routing service based on ERSM are provided to verify the feasibility and scalaibility of ERSM.
