Today, approximately 2.2 billion people around the world who use smartphone are eagerly waiting to welcome 5G technologies. The traffic trends in telecommunication networks have shifted form voice and data based services to multimedia services and interactive video service such as Virtual Reality(VR).The increase in such high bandwidth consuming services requires exceptionally high-speed communication network.Traditional cellular networks are incapable of accommodating huge amount of high data traffic users. If we analyze the current trends in data communication,we realize that there is an exponential growth in throughput to meet the ever-growing user demands. In such a scenario, different efforts have been made, which include increasing in electromagnetic spectrum, spectrum utilization optimization, lowering the interference, drastic reduction in latency(to 1ms)as well as optimization of energy consumption. The forthcoming 5G technology that is scheduled to be released in 2020 constitutes the Machine Type Communication(MTC)as its integral part. The key challenge faced by MTC is to make the User Equipment(UE)energy efficient. At present,Long Term Evolution(LTE)/Long Term Evolution-Advance(LTE-A)standards use Discontinuous Reception(DRX)to increase the energy efficiency. In my thesis,I analyze a modified DRX mechanism that features Quick Sleeping Indication(QSI)based new technique. The implementation of this technique is simple and it is quite efficient in terms of energy in Normal Coverage(NC)as well as Coverage Enhancement(CE)modes in MTC.To save the cost of maintaining MTC devices in the long term, energy consumption needs to be minimized, therefore, maximizing the battery life of MTC devices, which inspires the design of power efficient MAC protocol. Therefore,in the second section we analyze the performance of three conventional protocols, namely static and dynamic TDMA,and CSMA.In our comparison of these protocols,CSMA beats the static and dynamic TDMA in terms of time efficiency. However, both the TDMA protocols are highly energy efficiency. The clustering method is also analyzed in this thesis, which is an effective way of gathering data and energy conservation.By means of comparison Improved M2M Clustering Process(IMCP)performs better than the existing techniques, namely,Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy(LEACH)and Energy Aware Multi-Hop Multipath Hierarchy(EAMMH)in terms of energy consumption, network life time and number of dead nodes. Finally, the results show that DRX with Quick Sleep Indication for the MTC User Equipment outperforms the Idle Mode DRX for legacy User Equipment by comparatively simulating using MATLAB,the energy efficiency of these protocols.
