With the advent of the era of information, large capacity information transmission and ultrafast information processing become the main trends of development of optical fiber communication. This has put forward higher demand in the capacity of optical fiber transmission network, and communication band is becoming more and more wide.Whereas, due to the 4f-4f forbidden transition of-earth ions with narrow emission band,Bi-doped glasses or fibers have attracted significant attention and made up for the deficiency of traditional materials with ultra-broad near-infrared?NIR?luminescence in the region from1000 to 1700 nm.Bismuth Erbium co-doped optical fiber is a new type of active fiber with ultra-wideband emission. The wavelength range covers the O to L band and is expected to be an important fiber gain medium, fiber amplifier and fiber laser. The Bismuth Erbium co-doped fiber can be affected easily by the environment and the luminous properties will be changed by high temperature. In this paper, the spectral properties of Bismuth Erbium co-doped fiber under different annealing temperatures are discussed and the big progress of luminescence mechanism of optical fiber is hoped to be made.Firstly, rare earth and non-rare earth doped optical fiber are introduced, then Bismuth Erbium co-doped fiber is presented and luminescence properties of Bismuth doped material fiber are explained.Secondly, the Bismuth Erbium co-doped fiber is annealed and the spectral properties under anneal temperature from RT to 1100?are talked. When pumped by an 830 nm laser diode, the fiber exhibits a broad near-infrared?NIR?emission band consisting of three distinctive peaks at the wavelengths of 1100,1420 and 1530 nm,originating from different luminescence centers,i.e.,Al-related,Si-related bismuth active centers?BACs?and Er3+,respectively.The relative emission intensities of the BACs and Er3+vary in different manners with annealing treatment temperature such that three temperature regions,i.e.,RT300?,300800?,and 8001100?can be distinguished accordingly. The temperature sensing properties are found at low temperatures. At last, with the measure of TEM,XRD and EDS the nanoclusters and nanocrystals are found in fibers at high temperature. This can explain the spectral properties of Bismuth Erbium co-doped fiber at high temperature.
