Millard's Review is the first English newspaper, which was started by some professional American journalists in China.Having been the most influential English newspaper in China since its founding,it was the first media agency that published Mao Zedong's talks and photos during the Anti-Japanese War.It was attacked by the Japanese army because of its objective reports about China's resistance against Japan and its accounts of Japan's atrocious invasion of China. Moreover, its chief editor was included in Wangjingwei Reorganized National Government's blacklist of foreign journalists as the leading object of assassination.Started by T.F.Millard in 1917,Millard's Review makes its publications on Saturdays in sextodecimo format and each book covers 50 pages. As an idealist and practitioner with distinct characteristics,Millard is honored as “Oriental leading American journalist”.In 1922,John Benjamin Powell,as the next chief editor after Millard and successor of the newspaper, led Millard's Review to develop towards a golden stage of maturity. For the purpose of “clearly presenting the situation of Far East and China,in order that China could better know about Europe and America”,he persistently upheld freedom of the press, fair and objective stances, making great contributions to friendly relationships between Chinese and American people.Having developed through wars among Chinese warlords,Chinese civil war and the Japanese war of aggression against China,Millard's Review is an important witness of China's ultimate victory in bloodiestwars. It actively revolted against Japan's aggression, sharply criticized Japanese armies' malicious invasion of China, publicized China's resistance against Japan, inspired Chinese people, adhered to its management philosophy of reporting facts objectively and fairly, and maximized the effects of public opinions by mobilizing its numerous audiences home and abroad.During China's anti-Japanese war,it played indispensable roles in helping people from all parts of the world know and understand China. In that period, its reports were mostly made for resisting Japan's aggression of China and global expansion, while this newspaper reported and evaluated other great powers based on facts on the premise of protecting interests of the United States. It released ambitious policies of some countries such as Britain and France against China, but made fewer reports about Germany and Italy.Placed an extra emphasis on current political affairs and finance related to China,Millard's Review targets at people abroad who know about the Far East, and has achieved considerable outcomes in newspaper development. For instance, its original “Who's Who in China” enjoyed great popularity home and abroad.Nowadays,it has been separately compiled into important historical materials.Although it is an international newspaper started by a Westerner in China, its coverage in China has become increasingly higher in China and its circulation is even as high as that of Shen Bao,a Chinese newspaper created in the same period. Thus,it is clear that Millard's Review is highly influential and successful with a high coverage of audiences.
