A Research On The Data Journalism Production In The New Media Platforms Of The Beijing News

The arrival of the big data era has been bringing great changes to various sectors,including the field of journalism and communication.Data journalism,a data-focused news reporting form,rises in response to the new environment.And with their abundant communication ways,the new media platforms are able to provide broader room for the development of data journalism.Under such background,how the traditional media embrace the opportunities and challenges presented by the data journalism in the new media environment becomes a very important way to improve its living condition.The development of data journalism also leads to the prosperity of the related researches in the academic field.However,there are few articles that study the data journalism in the new media platforms of the traditional media.Therefore,this paper choses the data journalism section "See It Through"(tu ge ming bai)in the new media platforms of Beijing News,which is a famous and mature traditional media,as the study case and studies 436 pieces of data reports from January 1st 2015 to October 31st 2016.By analyzing the reports,this paper aims at presenting the current data journalism practice situation in the new media platforms of Beijing News,so as to provide some guidance to this medium as well as other similar media for their future development of data journalism.Through content analysis from three aspects,including the preparation stage,the selection of detailed content,the features of the visualization and the in-depth interviews with the principal editors from the angles of news production process,team structure,data sources,topic selection and representation forms,this study finds that "See It Through"(tug e ming bai)has achieved certain progresses in data-journalism-production,which covers combining the advantages of traditional and new media to product data journalism positively,emphasizing timeliness and closeness of the topic,striving for objective reports with data and applying various visual elements to vividly represent the news.However,there is still potential room for its improvement,such as the professional background of the team members,the technical level,the sources of the data and the digging of the data value.
