The core idea of the Software Defined Radio is to design standardized hardware platforms, use software to realize all kinds of communication system functions, and realize the switch of various communication services by loading different communication software. The problems of traditional radios and waveform such as long development cycle, high cost and complexity of migration and upgrade of waveform, and low compatibility can be overcome by SDRs. Besides, promoted by the rapid development of micro-electronics technologies, the communication devices are developing in the direction of portable and miniaturization. Therefore, the software defined radio systems based on small handheld platforms have broad application prospects.Usually, the small handheld terminals have some restraints in the size, volume, power consumption and processing capacity. In the composition of hardware, all of the function modules are fasten in a board or chip, and the number of device is comparatively low. Based on the characteristics of small handheld terminals, in this paper, a scheme that implementing software defined radio on the small handheld terminal is proposed, and a software defined radio architecture fits for small handheld terminals is devised. This architecture can not only guarantee the flexibility of systems and the portability of waveforms, but also avoid resource waste and improve resource usage efficiency.In this paper, the core frame and middleware of the software defined radio architecture fit for small handheld terminals are studied and devised. Firstly, on the basis of the definitions of core frame in SCA specification, a lot of ideas such as the lightweight interface, the pattern of optional inherited for interface, static deployment and the pro-installation of waveforms have been proposed, and a lightweight core frame fits for small handheld terminal is devised. Secondly, aiming to the share memory-based application scene, a custom middleware based on the share memory mechanism is devised. By using this custom middleware, it can avoid huge resource overhead and long transmission delay produced by using CORBA middleware, and can meet the requirements of the memory resource and start time of small handheld platform. In the end, by designing a test waveform, a proving scheme based on an actual hardware platform of handheld terminal, is brought out to test the software platform realized above.
