Students nowadays are native to the environment where digital technology is commonplace. Their new way of studying makes us focus our efforts of designing educational video games upon two targets: engaging the students, and getting educational contents across. Thus the guidelines must make sure the products reach the goals. Designers have to design and arrange the games' contents, mechanisms and interface to ensure that students can acquire and retain knowledge while engaged in gaming activities. This essay shall discuss these guidelines and their realization with specific cases. To adapt to the digital native students' way of studying, developers will have to make sure they build coherent contents with a clear goal, set into a reasonable structure; the mechanisms are easy to use and provide a fluent experience with certain challenges; and the interface presents no unnecessary information. These are ways to improve player-students' experience of engagement, and ultimately improve teaching performances.
