Laser has had a huge impact on human life since its birth day. Laser applications have penetrated into all aspects of human life. For example, laser processing, laser medical treatment, laser communication and laser ranging and so on. With the development of laser technology, how to effectively measure, describe and evaluate the quality of laser beam becomes a key problem. A laser beam quality automatic measurement instrument is developed in this paper, which can be used to test and analyze the beam quality of 400-1100 nm wide spectrum range.In this paper, through the study of the relevant parameters of the laser beam and its application area, it is considered that the M~2 factor of the laser beam is a parameter to evaluate the quality of the laser beam. Through the research of the M~2 factor test plan, the test instrument chooses the fixed lens and the dynamic probe. Through the study of laser beam intensity, choose suitable attenuation of laser attenuation, designs such as an external fixed attenuator, built-in continuous attenuator attenuator module according to the need of the project to complete the selection of the CCD. Then according to the standard ISO M~2 factor calculation standard, design the spot image edge detection and extraction algorithm, can calculate the exact spot diameter, according to the high precision trajectory propagation fitting algorithm, calculate the key parameters needed. Finally, the He-Ne laser experiments were carried out, test results show that the design of automatic test laser beam quality M~2 factor test instrument can accurately measure laser M~2 factor, laser far-field divergence angle test parameters, the errors of test results are analyzed, completed the design target.
