In the whole process of development of human society, volume measurement have been applied for many important applications. In the health field, we can implement diet plans by estimating the volume of food; in the field of highway safety monitoring, truck's box overload has a significant impact on traffic safety. However the traditional contact measuring method of volume cannot meet the application requirements in these areas.In order to reduce the cost of truck's box volume measuring system, an automatic measurement method using a single image is presented based on image processing. Firstly, the method locates feature points with ASM(Active Shape Model) algorithm; Secondly, we calculates the ground surface on which the truck was placed and establish virtual reality environments using the camera's intrinsic parameters and 3D model; Then, the truck's initial pose is estimated with EPn P algorithm, and using a geometry correction algorithm to correct geometry of 3D model to match the truck automatically; Under the constraints of ground surface's equations and control points, the 3D model is the same as the real truck; Finally, the truck's box volumes can be figured out by calculating the 3D model's box volume. Experiment results show that: the proposed method can measure the volume of the truck's box automatically with a single truck image, the measuring system is simple, and has a good real-time performance, the error of truck's box volume is within 5%, there is an important practical value.
