The rapid advance of our times accelerates the pace of life and meanwhile increases life stress, thus seriously affects the mental health of modern people. Due to the highly unified life, strict disciplines, and emergent military missions at any time, army men are at high risk of suffering from mental disorder or even diseases. Recruits are the potential victims of mental diseases. Therefore, it is of great realistic significance for us to block the risk source, strengthen the guidance in order to prevent accidents, improve the battle effectiveness, and to reduce non-combat loss rate.At present, mental health assessment of the recruits in the army is based on the psychological assessment scale, quantifying the mental status through scoring by rules. Some psychological assessment scales are repeatedly used, so the subjects may choose whatever answers they like based on their mood by the time, which may reduce the accuracy of the evaluation. In order to deal solve the problem, we attempt to adopt the free text expression in assisting the analysis of the psychological assessment.On the basis of intensive studies and literature review, the research and major findings include:(1) Adopt text sentiment analysis in the psychological assessment system. Based on the emotional corpora resource, this research uses the sentiment lexicon-based, Convolutional Neural Network-based, and KNN-based approach to conduct text sentiment analysis. Through analyzing the correlation between the Big Five Traits, symptom checklist, coping style questionnaire and personal growth environment, the scoring result from the psychological scale is compared with the text sentiment analysis result, so as to evaluate comprehensively the mental status of the subjects, greatly increasing the accuracy of psychological assessment. The experiment result shows that comparing with the psychological scale assessment, the assessment in this research improves significantly in accuracy and efficiency.(2) Build a psychological assessment system for army recruits in accordance with the regulations for the new recruits and the technical requirements of psychological assessment in the army. Based on the MVC framework, a convenient and effective evaluation system specifically for the army is developed. Several hundred of the 2015 recruits from a certain PLA unit are evaluated with this system. The psychological assessment data and the answers to the subjective questions expressed in texts are both collected. Through combining the assessment scale and sentiment analysis, a comprehensive assessment outcome is achieved, which wins praise from the army. The results show that the recruits are in good mental health condition. Their mental disorders mainly include anxiety, interpersonal sensitivity, and depression. Research findings also indicate that those who received only junior high school education or even less, smoking people, those growing up in single(non)-parent families, those who didn't spend the childhood with parents and so on should be paid special attention to.The expected result is attained when the system is used in the army. It does good to the increase in combat capacity, helps to create an environment suitable for recruiters' development and to know their appeals. In the future more free expression texts are to be adopted so that personalized psychological counselling and helping can be provided.
