Domestic and international scholars never stop to research on the cartography, and all kinds of cartography interrelated products are more frequently used in humans' lives, such as travel navigation, traffic management and so on, so the demands of the efficiency and the effect of cartography are becoming more and more strict. It turns out to be an important issue for cartography researchers to think about how to make cartography be concise and efficient and how to make geographic features expressed accurate and vivid.the researchers of cartography need to consider the issues on how to make cartography be concise but efficient and geographic features expression accurate and vivid.Aiming at the problems above, this dissertation comes up with a map symbol rendering configuration repository which taking the relationship of geographic features into account, and offering the integration and management of cartographic resources. On the basis of this repository, the thesis designs the process flow to deal with the relationships between geographic features and analyze some of them. An electronic map is shown as the final results. The main contributions are as follows:(1) The analysis and learning in the storage and expression of geographical data, the traditional procedures of electronic cartography, the development of map symbolization, and the relationship between geographic features. According to the previous research, this thesis puts forward a geographic solution which meeting the requirements.(2) The analysis and arrangement in computer technology, including the user interface design tools Microsoft Foundation Classes(MFC),the lightweight database system SQLite used for resources storage, the spatial database system Postgre SQL,the vector database access engine OGR, and the geometry rendering engine AGG/GDI+.(3) A complete map symbol rendering configuration repository is designed which taking the relationship of geographic features into account and offering the integration and management of cartographic resources. Besides, the repository provides separate graphic tools for each resource and offers the important Module interfaces for the process of automatic cartography.(4) Based on the map symbol rendering configuration repository, a complete process of automatic cartography is designed which considering not only the map symbol mapping rules and the process of map symbolization, but also the relationship of geographical features, offering a solution when features collision happens.(5) Based on the analysis and arrangement in geographical features' topological relation, the thesis provides a solution for collision between geographical features, and makes a comparison for the processing effects.Also, we have constructed an experimental electronic map on a specific area's geographic data using the cartography process proposed by this dissertation. The final results validate the feasibility of our automatic process of cartography and the good effect of our features conflict dealing method.
