Currently, with the rapid development of embedded technology, the embedded system with the characteristics of small size, high stability and low power consumption is widely used in industrial control, multimedia information processing, smart home and other fields. The market research shows that the products in those fields often have single fuctions without universal utility and are hard to be extended. Therefore, to design a new, multi-functional,post-scalable smart device is a development direction. In this paper, with the foundation ofthe ARM technology and embedded Linux a new kind of multimedia system terminal wich is based on Embedded Linux and intergrated with three fuctions of picture displaying, audio players and video monitoring has been designed and realized.Firstly, researches on each function module and interface technology of hardware circuit have been done in this paper. Then, according to the embedded Linux system development process, the Bootloader software, Linux kernel, root file system are customized and transplanted. In the application design, in accordance with modular thought, the Framebuffer driver and libjpeg library are called to achieve the picture decoding, display, zooming and translation; the ALSA sound card driver and MAD are called to achieve MP3 file decoding and playback function; V4L2 driver is called for video capture through the USB camera and to the transmission of video data is completed through the wireless network card according to the TCP/IP protocol. The real-time display in both PC and mobile terminals has been realized.In this paper, the sample design of multimedia system based on embedded Linux is basically completed, which can achieve the expected requirements. The results show that the system designed in this paper has good versatility andscalability, with unique properties. If we can improve the multimedia system, it will have strong promotion value in the future.
