The Comparative Study Of Data Journalism Between Sohu "Matrix" And The Guardian "Datablog"

With the rapid development of network technology and data visualization, data journalism has become a popular trend of journalism; Under the background of big data, studying Chinese and foreign media’s data journalism practice case, to explore its data mining, analysis and presentation features, in order to provide reference for the development of data journalism. It is very important and meaningful.The date journalism is date-centric, organized the report around data, what’s more, the technology which related date in the process of news production has been given an important position. The date journalism’s content characteristic is based on the depth of data mining, integration and visualization, its journalistic process is "double pyramid" structure, and it is an interdisciplinary, cross disciplinary news products under the age of big data. It plays a more important role in the news media, ’The Guardian", "New York Times", BBC and other international well-known media have launched data journalism practice, set up the specialized data journalism team and data journalism column. The Chinese media such as Sohu, "South Metropolis Daily", and CCTV also began to product data journalism.In the paper, take the Sohu "Matrix" and the Guardian "Datablog" as the research object, from the contents, manifestation and interactive way to compare the similarities and differences between these two media. Through the comparative study, the paper found that the Guardian "Datablog" focus on data collection, mining and visualization, take the initiative to open data, users are encouraged to participate in the production and dissemination of data journalism. The Sohu "Matrix" sources of data are limited, data visualization is still in static graphs, perspective of repowering is limitation, mining in the content the depth is not enough and the interactive channel is simple, lack of effective interaction with audience.The political news reports in the Sohu "Matrix" and the Guardian "Datablog" occupies an important position, therefore, the paper also makes a case study on the Guardian "US 2012 Election Data" and the Sohu "Report of 2014 National People Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Conference". The research found that the Guardian reflects the long time attention and report on the major news events, with the coverage report, rich in content, diverse visual means, and actively use social media to interact with the audience. The Sohu "Report of 2014 National People Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Conference" belongs to the conventional data display and summary, no significant characters tics.Based on above analysis, the formation of differences in these two media mainly because the different in transparency of information, the different in the degree of attention for media, the different in the product of visual chart and the different in the accomplishment and idea for journalist. Therefore, combined with the characteristics of these two media’s data journalism practice, the data journalism development should get a comprehensive data collection,make full use of the modern tools for data processing, use the multiple and innovation way for data presentation. The more important is the government and media provide guarantee for the data journalism, that is, the government should open data; the media should set up open concept, organization a data operation team.
