Research On The Data Journalism Of The Guardian And The Caixin.com For The Era Of Big Data

Many people call the age we live in the age of the big data.And the big data have made major changes to the way we live.The big data is ideal for our work and lives,especially for the journalism.According to the characteristics of big data,journalism tries to find the valuable information from the big data.Data journalism plays a more and more important role in the media industry and academia.Our country is later in the practice of data journalism compared to developed countries.Compared to developed countries,our country still exists in many large gaps,such as practice and research.Learning from the experience of the developed countries in Data-Journalism can improve the practice level of data journalism in China.In this paper,the research objects are the Guardian and the Caixin.com.Because our country is later than the developed countries in the practice of data journalism,there are still many gaps in the practice of data journalism compared with European and American countries.What are the primary differences between the Guardian and the Caixin.com? What are the reasons for these differences? What do you think are the major problems in Caixin.com? The aim of the present study was to analyze and solve these problems.This study used the content analysis method and analysis the four parts of data journalism,includes the data acquisition,data content,data processing and data presentation.Based on the detailed analysis of the production and reportage in Chinese data journalism and other countries,the study compares the difference the varied country and tries to seek the reasons.In this study we find that there are many differences between the Guardian and the Caixin.com.The number of data journalism in Caixin.com is less than the Guardian.On the data source type,the most data sources of Caixin.com are media reports and publications,but the most common type of the Guardian is the government organization.On the description of data sources,the fuzzy description is the highest proportion of Caixin.com,while the majority of description in the Guardian is clearly described.On the theme of type,the numbers of topic type in Caixin.com is more than event type,while the numbers of the Guardian's topic news as large as the event news.The Caixin.com is mainly based on static information graph,and the interactive information graph is relatively little.But the Guardian's interactive information graph is more.In addition,this study explains the reasons about differences for the totalproduction,the data source types and the topics between Caixin.com and the Guardian.According to the results of the content analysis,this study points out the problems existing in Caixin.com data journalism.The concept of data journalism system is not clear.And the trend of simplification and generalization is obvious.The Caixin.com is short of concept of open data and professional norms.And The Caixin.com data sources over reliance on media coverage.The topic contents are more than event contents.The data visualization is insufficient and the chart type is monotonous.The number of interactive information graph is less,and lacking of interaction with the reader.
