In the "Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards"(hereinafter referred to as the Standard),the teaching aim in Grade 3 and 4 in primary schools is established that students can listen and read some simple stories with the help of pictures;the teaching aim in Grade 5 and 6 is established that students can listen,read and tell some simple stories with the help of pictures.It shows that the combination of pictures and words is very important in the primary stage,in which English picture books are fully explained.There are various contents,bright colors,beautiful pictures in English picture books.It is rhythmic and suitable for children.It combines pictures and words,which can help students improve their interest in English learning and develop their comprehensive language abilities.If English teachers can use English picture books rationally and integrate material,they can get twice the result with half the effort.However,there are many problems in English picture book teaching in primary schools.Therefore,the author mainly adopts literature analysis,questionnaire and classroom observation to do the research.The thesis is based on the input hypothesis,cognitive development theory and multiple intelligence theory.In the thesis,the author points out some problems in English picture book teaching in primary schools and help teachers improve their ability of the English picture book teaching,which has theoretical value and utility value.The author chose 49 English teachers and 250 students in Liao Cheng City,Shandong Province as the study objects.The procedure lasted for 4 months.The questionnaires were given to investigate their understanding of English picture book teaching,bases of selecting teaching materials,teaching aims and methods,so that some problems can be pointed out and the conclusions can be made.There are some problems in the current English teaching through the questionnaire,for example,English teachers pay less attention to the English picture book teaching;teachers select picture books on the basis of words rather than pictures;the teaching aims are not overall;the teaching methods areoutdated.Based on the above questions,the author also makes some suggestions as follows:the teacher should get a deeper understanding of picture books so that students can increase comprehensible input,interest and relevancy;picture books are selected on the basis of pictures’ value,including their emotional connotation,rich information and artistic characteristics;the overall teaching aims should be established,including emotion aims,strategy guide and culture awareness;the various teaching methods should be adopted,for example,acting to improve their language ability and motor ability,drawing to improve their language ability visual and spatial intelligence,learning cooperatively to develop their interpersonal communication ability,singing to develop their rhythm ability.
