The middle school stage is a crucial period for the future development of English. Therefore,English education at this stage is particularly important. At the stage of middle school, students learn English mainly with teaching materials. And textbooks provide students with language materials, including listening, writing, reading materials, all of which are designed to develop students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. However, the ability of listening is the basis of language learning, and it is also an important skill in English learning. At the same time, listening is the most easily overlooked in these four skills. Therefore,in order to improve the efficiency of English teaching and improve students' listening ability, the researcher chooses two representative English textbooks as research objects:PEP version and Project English Ren Ai's version for Junior Middle School in Chongqing. The evaluation of this thesis is based upon the Compulsory Education Curriculum Standards(2011 Edition). The thesis adopts internal and external evaluation method which is proposed by Cheng Xiaotang.Among them, the internal evaluation is a comparative analysis of three aspects of test points in listening activities, including test methods in hearing activities, and cognitive levels in listening activities;meanwhile, discussing the similarities and differences between these two versions of textbooks in these three aspects. And it found out which textbook can better meet the requirements of listening activities in the three aspects of the “Compulsory Education Curriculum Standards”(2011 edition). The external evaluation, which aims to investigate the acceptance of students, adopts a way of questionnaire survey. The results show that,to some extent, the listening activities in two textbooks comply with the English Curriculum Standard for listening activities.PEP version and Ren Ai's version have wide rage of test methods, but the test points vary greatly;Thelevel of listening cognition in the two versions of textbooks has been progressively advanced. However, the level of advanced cognition in Renai Edition has been lacking. It is hoped that this research can be useful and helpful to develop and design the listening activities for middle school students.
