Text books are important materials to realize teaching and its objects. They are also the important sources for students to acquire knowledge, the main basis for teaching and learning. They are the indispensable materials in teaching, reflecting the national course offering for middle schools. The compilation of text books directly affects the teaching results and the students' interests in learning. So the compilation of the text books seems especially important.Exercises are the main means to test the students' mastery of knowledge and their learning ability. On the one hand, exercises can help the students review what they have learnt and understand what they have learnt. On the other hand, exercises can inspire students' thinking and cultivate their ability to analyze, solve problems. The exercises, especially the exercises in text books, should conform to the curriculum standards, reflecting the characteristics of students' physical, mental development and the needs of social, political, economical, technological development. The organization of exercises must be various, lively, beneficial for the students to do exploration and cultivate students' ability to observe the world, conduct experiments, do researches, have discussions.This study mainly analyzes and compares the exercise parts of three bioscience exercise books (Shanghai version, PEP version and American version) for junior middle school students from the perspective of difficulty degree. This study also probes into the conformance between the exercises in exercise book of Shanghai version and the needs of Shanghai bioscience course standards. Finally, this study conducts a questionnaire about the use of bioscience exercise book of Shanghai version and analyzes the result. Hopefully this study can do some contribution to the compilation of exercise book.This study comes to the following conclusions:1.All the three exercise books are based on traditional exercises. The main feature of them is the closeness to the text books and plays an important role in helping the students consolidate the knowledge they have learnt.2.The exercises in the three text books have their respective feature. There are many modules in the exercise books of American version and PEP version, while there are less ones in the exercise books of Shanghai version. There are most exercises of grade C and least ones of grade B in the book of PEP version among the three books. The exercises in the book of Shanghai version are most related to real life. The quantity of knowledge in the three books is similar.3. Through the analysis of conformance between exercises and curriculum standard, questionnaires about the use of exercises in the book, the following conclusions are reached:the main features of Shanghai version exercise book are fundamentality, closeness to the text book, proper exercise quantity accepted by teachers and students, moderate difficulty degree. The disadvantages are monotony of exercise types, inconspicuous distinction of difficulty degree and asymmetrical distribution of exercises in every module.According to the analytic results of the study, some suggestions are pointed out for compilation of exercises:1. The compilation of exercises should be close to the text books and in accordance with the times.2. The types of exercises must be various, and there are distinctive modules in the exercise books.3.There should be moderate difficulty degree and obvious key points in the exercise books.4. The advices from the front-line teachers should be adopted in the compilation of exercises.
