At home and abroad, research on metacognition has gained great attention. In the field of Library and Information Science, scholars have realized that the users really lack metacognitive skills rather than procedural skills, which include self perception, perception of cognitive strategy,to effectively monitor, regulate and evaluate the information seeking process, etc.,when they deal with the complex cognitive problems in complex information environment. The existing relevant research focused on the metacognitive ability in the view of the information literacy, the connotation and elements of metacognition in information seeking behavior research, the influence of metacognition on the process of information search and results, etc. Most of the research are quantitative research under the condition of experiments, however the metacogintive regulation during the information seeking under the natural conditions is still lack of research, and the research results vary widely. In this paper, based on existing research, take graduate student user as the research object;research the participants' metacognitive regulation during the information seeking of dissertation topic selection, and factors that influence the metacognitive regulation. In this paper, based on the qualitative research strategy of grounded theory, the qualitative data are collected through a diary study, interview, critical incident technique, and analyzed with open coding, selective coding, and theoretical coding. Finally get the following conclusion:(1)The graduate student's metacognitive regulation process during the information search of dissertation topic selection includes problem orientation, implementation monitoring and regulation strategy.Problem orientation consists of the following two parts: identifying a priori knowledge, and building the problem space.Monitoring process includes internal motivation, subject cognitive state, emotion, and external task schedule, scope of search, search results.Regulation strategy including forecasting, planning, strategy adjustment, balance, link, use thetools, communication strategy.(2)Some factors influence the graduate students' metacognitive regulation in the information seeking process: personal factors, task situational factors, environmental factors.Personal factors are the internal reasons that influences graduate students to regulate their information seeking process,it includes search knowledge, scientific knowledge and experience,self-efficacy,achievement goal, information demand intensity, the intensity of emotional experience.Task situational factors are the external conditions influences graduate student to regulate their information search process,it includes the stage of topic selection, workload of dissertation topic selection, the time prepared for dissertation topic, difficulty of information seeking.Environmental factors such as the system environment, academic environment are the situational factors influences graduate student to regulate their information seeking process.(3)According to the results of the study, this paper put some suggestions for information user, the existing information system construction and information literacy education according to the results of the study.
