The masterpiece is the carrier of traditional culture and crystallization of human wisdom,which influences each generation especially young adolescents by its profound ideological connotation and unique artistic charm.Reading masterpieces is beneficial to improve students' aesthetic standards and develop good qualities.There are clear obligations in the programmatic document on education and teaching in China over the years.Besides,the high school entrance exam always regards masterpieces as an examination point in every province.All of these above are ample evidence to the necessity of reading masterpieces.The students in middle schools,a crucial period to their growth and development,generally are 12-16 years old.Reading influences not only their mastery of knowledge,but their development in the future.Throughout the current situation of reading,students read little famous work in most of the middle schools,especially in rural areas where there are common problems such as weak teaching force and poor learning environment.What is more,compared with those in cities,middle schools in rural areas are accompanied with rare professional teachers of language literacy,low infrastructure facilities including school libraries etc.These are all unfavorable factors in students' reading.This paper is based on the Chinese Curriculum Criterion for Compulsory Education.Firstly,it is seen that reading masterpieces is of vital necessity by analyzing selected famous books in PEP Chinese textbooks and combing the examination questions of masterworks in the last five years.Secondly,according to survey of middle school students' reading status in rural areas,statistics show several problems such as a scarcity of reading resources suitable for students,bad reading atmosphere and unwarranted reading time.With regard to teachers,problems are poor reading literacy,weak professionalism,unscientific reading methods,and so forth.Finally,targeted strategies including syntopical reading instruction,film and television teaching,and combination of reading and writing,are put forward to improve above problems,which are expected to provide material for the teachers at junior high schools to instruct masterpiece reading.
