With the rapid development of globalization,English has become an essential skill for the talents in the 21st century and has been continuously occupying an important position in senior high education.The new curriculum puts forward a further requirement for English teachers,which requires the teachers to improve their teaching notion and teaching methods and take advantage of modern technology to stimulate English teaching.This is a challenge for all the English teachers,but also encourages them to explore innovative methods to improve English learners’ performance.English grammar teaching has long been a challenge for both students and teachers.The complicated grammar system and multiple grammar rules scare and discourage students and also lead the teachers to think how to teach grammar effectively.Although we have tried to use many ways to promote grammar teaching,such as deduction,translation,students can’t master the grammar points well even if they can do the exercise right in the class.They forget them easily,so we teachers have to repeat over and over again.Is there a way to make students learn grammar willingly and happily and remember it quickly even if they forget?Maybe English songs can make it.English songs,on the one hand,as the combination of English language and music,can attract students and increase their interest and motivation in learning English grammar.On the other hand,we can find nearly all the grammar points in the ocean of English songs.The lyrics of a song present a real situation,in which students can experience how the grammar is used and then imitate to use it.More importantly,once students are able to sing a song,they can easily review the grammar by just singing it,which is definitely more interesting than just memorizing the texts or sentences.And even if they may forget the grammar,they can easily remember it when the music is on or when they just sing it.To testify the function of English songs in grammar teaching,I selected seven songs which contain the structures in Book 3 and Book 4 and conducted an experiment in the two classes I teach.The two classes were in grade one and it was the second term.In the control group,I taught grammar nearly the same way as last term,while in the experimental group,I used English songs to lead in,to do exercise and to further practice grammar by speaking and writing.This experiment is successful.Through the questionnaires,interviews and analysis of their grammar test,the conclusion is clear that English songs can greatly advance students’ interest in English grammar and help the majority of the students to have a good command of basic grammar.In addition,the students feel that they not only get improved in grammar,English songs also help in listening and writing etc.Therefore,I believe that using English songs in grammar class is an effective method.
