Achievement motivation theory refers to the desire or tendency of individuals to overcome obstacles and display their talents.It is based on the production of humans' needs to encourage individuals to engage in their own important or valuable work,which strive people to achieve success with an internal driving force.Achievement motivation theory are presented in a series of essays in the 1950 s through a study of human needs and motivations by David C.McClelland(1978),a Harvard University professor.Atkinson's achievement motivation theory is a theory to further deepen McClelland's achievement motivation in 1963,which made a wide range of achievement motivation model.The author wants to apply this theory to listening course that the study could come up with more suggestions for the achievement motivation research,furthermore,it could improve the English listening teaching level and make it become better and better.This thesis adopts three instruments: interviews,questionnaires and tests.Besides,it mainly uses quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis to explore the following three research questions: 1.What are the main reasons of demotivation for the primary students in English listening class? 2.What are the differencesofAchievement Motivation in terms of gender and grade in primary English class?3.What kind of measures can be applied to stimulate primary students' motivation more effectively in listening?Based on the research findings,the author finds that the lacking of learning motivation is a common phenomenon which obviously exists in primary school English class,almost all English teachers desire to use some motivations strategies to promote students' learning interest in their listening classes.Both teachers and students hold a positive view towards Achievement Motivation Theory.They think that achievement motivation theory is helpful for students' learning and teachers' teaching.The functions of motivation are activation function,directive function and reinforcement function.What's more,there is a close relationship between teachers' application of motivational strategies and stimulation of students' learning motivation.On the basis of this research findings,teachers could use achievement motivation in English listening class and could use it properly in speaking,reading and writing class.Besides,it is necessary for teachers to make a clear survey about the students' overall English level,the family background and then,based on the survey information,teachers give feedback flexibly during the class.
