| With the rising tide of globalization and the continuous improvement of China’s national status,the necessity of integrating Chinese culture into English teaching is recognized by the public.As a matter of fact,the input of target culture is much more than that of our Chinese culture in English teaching in China.Because of the ignorance of our Chinese culture,the students often have no idea about how to express the Chinese culture in English in cross-cultural communication.This phenomenon is first cited as “Chinese culture aphasia” in Guangming Daily by professor Cong Cong from Nanjing University(2000).After the report of this phenomenon,many scholars start to conduct investigations about it.Most of their investigations are conducted in college English teaching in China.The main purpose is to examine the college English teachers and students’ ability to express Chinese culture in English.All of the studies indicate that the phenomenon of Chinese culture aphasia does exist among the college English teaching.Ignoring of Chinese culture in English teaching is the main reason for this problem.But,there are not many studies about this phenomenon in middle school English teaching.Therefore,this investigation is carried out on the phenomenon of Chinese culture aphasia in Jing Ying Middle School in Shi Jiazhuang.This school is composed of elementary school,junior high school and senior high school.This investigation is conducted in the senior high school.In this study,three questions need to be solved:(1)Does the phenomenon of Chinese culture aphasia exist in senior high school English teaching?(2)If the Chinese culture aphasia does exist,what are the reasons causing Chinese culture aphasia?(3)What are the senior high school students’ and English teachers’ attitude toward Chinese culture?The instruments are test papers and a questionnaire.Test papers are used to examine the high school students and English teachers’ ability to express Chinese culture in English.At the same time,the author uses a questionnaire to inquire their attitudes and expectations toward the integration of Chinese culture into English classroom teaching as well as the reasons causing the Chinese culture aphasia.The results show that the phenomenon of Chinese culture aphasia also exists among senior high school English teachers and students.Almost students and teachers think it is necessary to integrate Chinese culture into English language teaching.The absence of Chinese culture in English teaching and learning materials,English assignments and in the English tests are the reasons causing the phenomenon of Chinese culture aphasia.According to the problems in English teaching and the analysis of the study,the author provides solutions: improving English teachers’ ability of expressing Chinese culture in English;cultivating students’ cross-cultural awareness;organizing various activities to learn Chines culture and its English expression. |
