English Curriculum Standards of Compulsory Education(2011)noted: “Language skills,language knowledge,emotional attitude,learning attitude,learning strategies and cultural awareness are five aspects that composed the overall objectives of the English curriculum.” Listening,as one of the most important language skills,has a direct impact on the abilities of speaking,reading and writing.For a long period of time,English teaching of junior middle schools emphasizes too much on cultivating students’ abilities of reading and writing,and regard improving students’ test scores as the teaching goal.The English listening class is restricted to listening to the textbook.Listening resources were reserved for listening tapes attached to the textbook.English songs,as an important cultural carrier,have been introduced into English grammar and vocabulary teaching by many teachers.The author believes that choosing appropriate English songs for listening learning,not only can improve the enthusiasm of students’ listening comprehension,but also can tap the authentic languages of English songs,and thus enhance the abilities of students’ English listening.The author selected 55 students from Class Eleven,Grade Nine of Zhumadian NO.4 Middle School as the research subjects.Questionnaires,interviews,tests and other research instruments were conducted in the four-month experimental teaching plan to discuss the following three issues:(1)What changes may take place to students’ view on English listening class after the application of lyrics dictation into English listening learning?(2)What are the major changes of students’ English scores after the training of lyrics dictation?(3)What are the influences of lyrics dictation training on students with different proficiency in English listening? First of all,the author issued 55 questionnaires in the class,six students were selected as the interviewees through the stratified sampling,and collected the final examination papers of Grade Eight as pre-test.After the analysis of teaching materials and the courseware,six English songs were chosen to be further developed to adapt to the English listening teaching.At the end of the experiment,the author carried out the second questionnaires and interviews,and selected the final examination papers of Grade Nine of the first semester as the post-test.The results show that the lyrics dictation has changed the most students’ view on the listening learning in the past.Lyrics dictation can improve the students’ English listening performance to a certain extent.However,due to the short experimental period,the rate of achievement is not evident.Compared with students from high-scores group,students from medium-scores and low-scores benefit more after the experiment.In summary,this study on applying lyrics dictation to English listening not only provides an effective method of listening learning for students,but also offers a reference for teachers to enrich the listening teaching class.
