This thesis aims to test the effect for improving listening comprehension by doing sentence dictation experiment in Middle School. For most Chinese students, learning English is only for the sake of passing the examination in Middle School and teachers always put much attention on the reading and writing skill under the educational environment. Leading to listening and speaking are so weak that both make students reduce their whole English level in Middle School. Hence, most students in Middle School have always been encountering obstacles on the aspects of listening and speaking, they lose interests in learning English gradually. Therefore, it is never too serious to pay much attention on listening improving. Scholars in this field have been trying to explore effective teaching methods to improve listening comprehension ability. Dictation is an impactful way because of its simple design and convenient operation. However, studies at home and abroad mainly focus on its testing function, its teaching and training function has been neglected for a long time. Therefore, the present study tends to design sentence dictation on the basis of Krasten’s input hypothesis, schemata theory, memory theory and syntax and tries to explore its feasibility and efficacy for the improvement of English listening comprehension ability by contrast experiment. Specifically, the following research questions will be dealt with:1. Does sentence dictation practice promote learners` listening performance? If yes,2. How does sentence dictation training improve learners` listening performance? The chief task is to analysis different types of dictation, including ordinary dictation, partial dictation, graduated dictation, dicto-comp and dictation with noise. A lot of studies about types of dictation have been done at home and abroad for several years, but a few researches on sentence dictation for middle school students are hardly done. While the thesis towards to test whether sentence dictation can significantly improve listening comprehension ability for middle school students. And how does sentence dictation training improve learners` listening performance? The study has an experiment on 55 students in Class Three Grade Two in 19 th Middle School in Guiyang. It employs both qualitative and quantitative methods. The contrast of pre-test and post-test, also questionnaire and interview are used at the same time.In the thesis, SPSS19.0 is adapted to analyze the data by doing the mean and standard deviation to prove sentence dictation can improve listening comprehension ability for middle school students. Furthermore, the questionnaire can intensify the rationality and feasibility for the present study, in addition, the interview shows us that the specific reasons that students` think the sentence dictation training can improve their listening ability. The experimental findings indeed testify that sentence dictation can improve students` listening performance effectively; what’s more, the sentence structure memorizing is the way that students enhance their listening ability.Based on the data analysis and discussion after the experiment, the author puts forward some tentative suggestions. From which teachers can be enlightened in many sides on teaching methods. The whole thesis includes following:Chapter one is a general introduction, including research background, research purpose and significance, also the organization of the thesis. Chapter two is the literature review, which covers major and important researches at home and aboard. Chapter three presents the theoretical framework of the whole thesis. Chapter four is about methodology design; it comprises research questions, subjects, instruments, procedure, materials and data collection. Chapter five is the analysis and discussion of the results. It is conducted from two aspects. Chapter six is a summary of the thesis and provides some implications in further teaching. It also explains the limitations and gives some relevant suggestions from the research.
