Reading as a fundamental language skill gains much attention in the process of English teaching and learning.English reading ability is also one of the important indicators in assessing students' English comprehensive ability and quality.In recent years,with a new round of educational reform,the student-centered teaching approach has been gradually considered as a mainstream in English reading teaching.It has transferred the focus from the mechanical reading drills onto the cultivation of students' English reading ability,comprehending skills and the stimulation of students' interest in reading.The effective reading strategies and the training of students' thinking ability have been bringing up widespread concerns.Under this circumstance,the proposal of “Guided Learning Plan”(GLP)just meets the reform conceptual demands of The New English Curriculum Standards.In the GLP teaching model,students are assigned and encouraged to fulfill the tasks under the guidance of their teachers.The GLP plays the role as the carrier,stringing up the teacher as the leading figure,the learning plan as the guidance,and the students' autonomous learning as the main target in the process of classroom teaching.This research paper,based on the theory of Scaffolding and Humanism,aims to exploring how the GLP,which is designed in consideration of the features of teaching English reading,is put into practice in the classroom teaching,with the purpose of exploring how the GLP is carried out in the reading teaching and testifying its positive effects on English teaching and learning.The participants are 75 students from two classes in Grade Eight in a local junior high School,one as the experimental class andthe other as the controlled class.Before the experiment,the students in the two classes are parallel in English proficiency.After being taught with different teaching methods and approaches for three months,both classes would be provided the reading comprehension test for collecting data and analyzing the effects of the GLP.During the research,pre-questionnaire,post-questionnaire,pre-test,post-test and interview are employed for collecting qualitative and quantitative data.It was taken for granted that during the process of adopting the GLP,it should be optimized and modified.The results show that the application of the GLP to reading teaching can not only improve students' reading ability effectively but also strengthen their autonomous learning ability and awareness of peer or group cooperation.Furthermore,it can help the teachers to promote the classroom teaching efficiency and encourage the students to learn happily and effectively.
