Vocabulary teaching is essential for senior high school English teaching and there are explicit requirements on the vocabulary size and use in The New Standard English Curriculum.However,the present high school English vocabulary teaching is far from satisfactory.Students have little interest in learning vocabulary and they do not have effective learning strategies.In addition,teachers' classroom teaching cannot arouse students'vocabulary learning interests.The thesis aims to implement the narrative approach to improve students' interests in learning vocabulary and help them enlarge their vocabulary size and use vocabulary.Narrative approach is based on cognitive science,cognitive linguistics and foreign language teaching theory.Cognitive science holds that it is necessary to combine language learning with emotion,imagination and creation.And this is the characteristic of narrative approach.Cognitive linguistics focuses on the participation of learners in constructing knowledge.The foreign language teaching theory emphasizes on the important functions of narrative in language learning.Narrative approach proposes a narrativized method in foreign language teaching.It maintains that a certain teaching approach should be designed and presented in the form of narration to create a real situation or possible world in order to make students be devoted to learning.This paper intends to answer the following three questions.1).In what ways could the narrative vocabulary teaching approach help students learn vocabulary?2).In what ways could the narrative vocabulary teaching approach arouse students'interests in learning vocabulary?3).What are the advantages of the narrative vocabulary teaching approach compared to traditional vocabulary teaching approach?The subjects in this study are two classes of Grade 1 in senior high school in Panjin City.122 students are chosen as the subjects.The experimental class has 60 students and the control class has 62 students.The experimental class use the narrative approach to guide vocabulary teaching while the control class use the traditional teaching method to teach vocabulary.In this research,there are three main research instruments which are questionnaire,pre-test and post-test and interview.The period of whole research lasts for 16 weeks.The study shows that the narrative vocabulary teaching approach is much better than the traditional vocabulary teaching approach.The students guided by the new vocabulary teaching method master a larger vocabulary size than those in the control class.Moreover,students' interests in vocabulary learning have been aroused and their confidence has also been enhanced.The study provides a new vocabulary teaching approach-narrative approach to guide English vocabulary teaching and it enriches vocabulary teaching theory.
