According to the new curriculum, a student is expected to master about3500words ongraduation from the senior high school. But the real situation is far from the satisfactory. Mostof students face the problem of poor vocabulary size. The direct result of it is the lack ofcommunicative ability in English.The thesis use a new approach----narrative approach stimulates student’s interests andhelp them memorize and use the word, and then improve their English learning ability.In this study the author made a16-week experiment teaching. Stories used in class weredesigned by the writer according to the content of each module, personal experience, currenthot topic and so on.During the experiment, the author employed the instruments consisting of twovocabulary tests, a questionnaire and an interview. After the data analysis of the interview andtests, the writer got the following conclusion: Narrative approach used in vocabulary teachingcan arouse students’ learning interest; enlarge their vocabulary size; help them recite and usethe word. Improve the communicative competence.
