As we all know, vocabulary is the basis and foundation of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.Vocabulary teaching is one of the most important aspects in English teaching in senior high school.According to the New English National Curriculum Standard, the high school students should master more than 3500 words after graduating from the senior high. However, lots of students cannot reach this standard.Teachers often hear of the complaint from students that they can't remember the vocabulary efficiently and exactly.Recently researchers and linguistics have conducted many studies on how to improve students' vocabulary, but most of them only focus on the words and the method of memorizing words.Few of the studies put the words in the context, offering the students the opportunity to make their own stories by using the words they have learned. The aim of this paper is to study the application of narrative approach to English teaching in senior high school and to find out whether this approach can improve students' vocabulary and grades in examination. Two research questions were addressed in the research. The first one is “What is the effect of the narrative approach on improving students' vocabulary learning during the high school period?” The second is “What is the effect of the narrative approach on motivating students' interest in vocabulary learning?” To answer of these two questions, the researcher carried out two round action researches in her own class. After the researcher identified the problems that existed in vocabulary teaching and learning, she carried out the first round action research. She handed out a questionnaire and a vocabulary test to investigate students' attitudes to vocabulary learning and test their present proficiency. Then the researcher designed the teaching procedure. After a period of conduction, the researcher handed out the questionnaire and gave another vocabulary test to summarize the achievement and find out the problems for the second round action research. In the second round action research, the researcher identified three problems and adjusted the action research plan.Questionnaire, interview and tests were also used in the second round action research. The collected data was analyzed by the SPSS.The results of the study show that narrative approach plays a significant role in changing students' attitudes in vocabulary learning, and improving their vocabulary learning. In conclusion, teaching vocabulary by Narrative Approach is an effective way to improve high school students' vocabulary learning.
