Entrepreneurial university which advocates applications of knowledge in practices is a brand-new school-running mode and a theory on school management developed based on traditional colleges and universities.As it accommodates itself to requirements presented by the era of knowledge-driven economy for colleges and universities and plays an active role in social and economic development,the transformation from traditional colleges and universities to the entrepreneurial universities has boomed worldwide.Under the guidance of government policies,some colleges and universities of China have started to explore the constructions of entrepreneurial universities.However,due to lack of theoretical directions and practical experiences,constructions of them have not been accomplished significantly.Under such a background,how to achieve the transformation of traditional colleges and universities to the entrepreneurial universities is analyzed from the perspective of management ability improvement so as to provide a new thought for entrepreneurial university constructions in China.For this study,the literature research method is mainly adopted to summarize basic contents of entrepreneurial university construction,connotations of university management ability as well as the relation between them.Through case study,it is also?discussed how to improve various management abilities by cneans of serics of changes to fulfill the transformation under the guidance of basic entrepreneurial university construction contents after the entrepreneurial university transformation objective has been determined by a college or university.Primary contents are as follows.Firstly,researches on entrepreneurial universities and management in universities which are performed by scholars at home and abroad are integrated to discuss about the necessity of entrepreneurial university construction from a perspective of management ability improvement.Secondly,concepts such as the entrepreneurial university and the university management ability,etc.are defined;moreover,not only is theoretical foundations for entrepreneurial university construction put forward,but the logic relation between entrepreneurial university construction and university management ability is also settled.Thirdly,the status quo of entrepreneurial university construction is sketched out and problems currently existing are summed up;in addition,Zhejiang A&F University is taken as an example to analyze management ability defects which are principal obstacles to the entrepreneurial university construction and probe into the corresponding reasons.Fourthly,the University of Warwick and MIT are treated as the typical representatives of entrepreneurial universities in Europe and America to illustrate concrete practices of colleges and universities with different growth modes during entrepreneurial university construction.On this basis,approaches to improving the management ability are studied.Fifthly,combining particular cases of colleges and universities in China and successful experiences of foreign ones,key points for entrepreneurial university construction in China are presented to provide feasible and effective suggestions for management ability improvement and entrepreneurial university construction fulfillment in colleges and universities of China.As for research conclusions,they are as follows.1.While entrepreneurial university inherits and expands traditional universities,the improvement of management ability is the inevitable course for the transformation of the latter to the former.2.Entrepreneurial university construction includes five basic contests.To be specific,they consist of a management team which takes the initiative in transforming,innovative intermediary organizations,the accumulation and mastery of resources,the broadened university functions and the entrepreneurial culture within the scope of the whole university.3.The transformation from traditional colleges and universities to entrepreneurial universities is rcquired to be directed by basic cointests of entrepreneurial university construction to enhance five management abilities including the strategic planning competency,the organization operation ability,the resource integration capability,the social service level and the cultural construction ability.4.By means of management sense enhancement,organizational innovation realization,incentive mechanism improvement,university function broadening and entrepreneurial idea establishment,etc.,five management abilities can be improved for colleges and universities.
