The Application Of Group Work In Male Elderly Emotional Expression Ability

Activity Theory holds that abundant activities can contribute to improving life quality of old people however, nowadays, the activity involvement between elderly men and women shows gender imbalances which the participation level of elderly men is significantly lower than that of elderly women. Based on observation of daily activities participation of older persons and interviews of some elderly people in W welfare, this study found that main reasons of low activity involvement of old males include: the construction and fracture of identity under the cultural influence of gender, which means gender differences in leisure behavior making it difficult for old males to form small groups. As a result, they are easily alone. Moreover, gender stereotypes also makes elderly males lose opportunity and ability to express their emotion, which always been ignored.For these above reasons, under the guide of Activity Theory and Gender Theory,we used a method of group work and designed five group activities to tarin elderly men' emotional skills, to improve their ability of emotional expression, therefore, in order to improve their activity participation levels and improve quality of life.As a result of the assessment and summary of old male emotional expression ability developing group, the author confirmed the the application of group work's effectiveness in improving the ability of expressing emotions of elderly males. The improvement of elderly males' emotional expression ability helps to strengthen their experience of self-value in the activity participation, enhance their self-confidence,which, as a whole, can contribute to the implement of activity effect.
