| The senior high school sports students are a very special group of students who are well equipped with professional physical knowledge and skills for years of systematical cultivation and training in the field of Physical Education while receiving senior high school education like other ordinary students. In recent years with the popularities of higher education and enrollment expansion of univers ities, the population of the sports students in senior high schools in DanCheng County presents an increasingly rapid developmental momentum. Though the majority of the sports students have already realized the importance and necessity of learning English well in the process of being admitted by universities, actually they still find it a huge challenge for them to reach even the lowest requirement for their English immediate marks in NCEE,let alone expecting them to become commanders of English. Therefore,for many English teachers, it is a real headache for them to teach sport students to learn English well and get excellent immediate marks in NCEE. Acting as one of the prerequis ites for fundamentally learning English well, motivation plays a significant role in getting excellent English immediate marks. As English teachers we shoulder the responsibility of helping the sports students to get excellent English immediate marks and improving the quality of English teaching for sports students in Dancheng County area. However, the fundamental way to is to take some effective and appropriate measurements which can stimulate and maintain sports students’ ELM during the whole process of English teaching and learning. In order to find the fundamental way, the author carried out a study of English learning motivation of sports students from three senior high schools in Dancheng County, therefore it is necessary and important to answer the following three questions:(1) What is the characteristic of ELM of the sports students from threesenior high schools in DanCheng County?(2) What are the general and specific differences of ELM of the sportsstudents belonging to different groups in DanCheng County?(3) What is the tendency of their attribution on ELM of the sportsstudents from three senior high schools in DanCheng County?In order to answer questions(1) and(2), the author applied Gao Yihong’ scale and carried out the questionnaire for 346 sports students from three senior high schools in DanCheng County.In order to answer question(3), the author himself designed and carried out two individual interviews for 40 sports students and 12 English teachers.According to Gao’s classification of seven ELM factors, with the help of SPSS17.0, the author carefully analyzed the data from the questionnaire and interviews, the research findings are:(1) As for the characteristic of ELM of the sports students from threesenior high schools in DanCheng County, the characteristic is:Generally speaking, in the current the main ELM of sports students belongs to instrumental learning motivation rather than integrative learning motivation; specifically speaking, the sports students learn English mainly for the purpose of being able to pass the NCEE not for accepting English culture or shouldering social duties.(2) As for the differences of ELM of the sports students belonging todifferent groups in DanCheng County.The general differences are:There is no obvious significance existing between boy sports students group and girl sports students group.There is also no obvious significance existing between city sports students group and country sports students group.However, there is obvious significance existing between ordinary sports students group and excellent sports students group.The specific differences are:Within the group consisting of boy sports students and girl sports students, as for the P-values of ELM factors, the significance is obvious on “Immediate Marks”; as for the Means of ELM factors, on “Social Duty” and “Going Abroad”, boy sports students is larger than girl sports students.Within the group consisting of city sports students and country students, as for the P-values of ELM factors, there is no obvious significance; as for the Means of ELM factors, on “Going Abroad”, city sports students are larger than country sports students.Within the group consisting of ordinary sports students and excellent sports students, as for the P-values of ELM factors, there are obvious significances on “Intrinsic Interest”, “Social Duty” and “Immediate Marks”; as for the Means of ELM actors, on “going abroad”, excellent sports students is larger than ordinary sports students.(3) As for the tendency of their attribution on ELM of the sportsstudents from three senior high schools in DanCheng County. Thetendency is :Because of wrong self-knowledge and their teachers’ ignorance in guiding sports students’ attribution on ELM, the majority of the sports students tend to extrinsic attribution.Having combined the research findings and English teaching experience, the author put forward three practical suggestions:(1)Stimulating and maintain sports students’ English learning interest;(2)Attaching importance to sports students’ individual differences;(3)Guiding sports students to correctly attribute; Expecting these three suggestions are useful and effective in enabling sports students’ to get excellent English immediate marks in examinations and improving the quality of English teaching for sports students in senior high schools in Dancheng County. |
