A Report On English To Chinese Translation Of News Commentaries About Trump's Early Presidency

With the incredible development of Internet,the whole world is faced with the flourishing of information.Various types of news pop up from all kinds of screens,from smart phones to computers.However,English news,particularly news commentaries published by various news agencies are not so frequently translated into Chinese.Can Kao Xiao Xi(CKXX),as China's national level newspaper,provides translated versions of English news including in-depth news commentaries.This report is based on the author's one-month internship at CKXX,during which the author's task mainly focuses on translating English news commentaries about Donald Trump's early presidency.In this translation report,the author analyzes the source text according to Peter Newmark's text typology theory.Translation cases are analyzed under the guidance of translation strategies put forward by Peter Newmark and the widely accepted “ABC” principle for news translation.The report discloses that upon silting through the features of news commentaries,polysemic words,proper nouns and lengthy sentences can be properly translated under the guidance of the translation strategies of semantic translation,communicative translation and their combination.Accordingly,translation methods like adopting four-character phrases,adding connectives and inserting category words play effective role in keeping the accuracy,brevity and clarity of the translation of news commentaries.This report mainly consists of five chapters: Chapter One introduces the internship,the translation process and the significance of the project briefly.Chapter Two analyzes the features and the differences between Chinese & English news commentaries respectively.Chapter Three describes Peter Newmark's text typology theory and main translation strategies,namely semantic translation and communicative translation.Besides “ABC” news translation principle are introduced.Chapter Four is the major part of this report.The author demonstrates how the translation theory and strategies combined with the “ABC” principle are manifested in detailed examples analysis.Chapter Five draws a conclusion of major findings,limitations and suggestions.
