A Report On The C-E Translation Of UESTC Hospital Website Based On Peter Newmark's Correlative Approach To Translation

This is a report on the Chinese-English(C-E)translation of UESTC Hospital Website.The source text covers four columns of the website: Departments & Centers,About Us,Find a Doctor,and Medical Insurance Policy.It is hoped that this report can be a useful translation for UESTC Hospital,and provide reference for people studying the Chinese-English translation of hospital websites in the future.The translation is guided by the Correlative Approach to Translation,which was formally put forward by Peter Newmark in 1994.The core definition of the Correlative Approach to Translation is “The more important the language of a text,the more closely it should be translated.” Peter Newmark further explains the “close translation”,and raises methods including transference,naturalization,literal translation,and transposition,etc.Based on the theory,this report analyzes the source text of UESTC Hospital Website at its lexical level,grammatical level,and textual level,and puts forward translation methods applicable to the C-E translation of hospital websites.The report is divided into 5 chapters.Chapter One depicts background of hospital website translation,and introduces the translation task and process briefly.Chapter Two analyzes the source text at its lexical level,grammatical level,and textual level.Lexically,the source text features a number of medical terms and proper nouns with Chinese characteristics.Grammatically,four-character structures,parallel structures,and periodic sentences are seen everywhere.Textually,relations between sentences and paragraphs are expressed through their internal logic relations,without obvious hypotactic markers.Chapter Three introduces the development of Peter Newmark?s Correlative Approach to Translation,and presents detailed translation methods guided by the Correlative Approach to Translation.Chapter Four delves 11 typical translation examples at its lexical level,grammatical level,and textual level,and attempts to sort out proper methods to translate UESTC Hospital Websites.Chapter Five tries to summarize methods for hospital website translation,conclude the guiding effect of Corrective Approach,and presents problems still to be solved in the future.
