On Nautical Contract Translation From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

With the increasing development of globalization,the nautical trade between China and the foreign nations has become more and more frequent,especially the chartering trade and the sea freight transport with the English-speaking countries.Meanwhile,the economic development also makes demand for the documents and research in the nautical English,however,different translation versions are of different qualities,and the related nautical translation should be enhanced further.This paper takes the Sino Time Charter as an example and makes a deep exploration on the characteristics and translating methods of the specialized vocabularies,the sentences and the discourses,so as to offer new horizon for the translation circles.During the translating process,some conclusions have been drawn: firstly,the charter party translation belongs to the professional translation,and it lays much emphasis on the veracity of the information exchange and the delivery.Therefore,the smaller deviation of the Skopos theory and the Skopos rule means the smaller flexibility when choosing the translation strategies;secondly,it mainly adopts the literal translation and the domestication translation strategy when dealing with the nautical English vocabulary which could be divided into the contract terms,acronyms and polysemy;thirdly,about the imperative sentence,this paper mainly uses the literal translation and the omission to keep the sentence pattern and the imperative tone,and strictly loyal to the original text;fourthly,in terms of the passive sentences,the paper tends to use the omission and paraphrase strategy,and neglects the passive relationship of the original text but grasps the spirits instead;as for the translation of the long sentences and the discourse,the paper advises to divide the sentence constituents and make the relationship between the constituents clear,it mainly adopts the paraphrase and the domestication strategy,in this way,the readers could understand explicitly.This paper aims to discuss the English-Chinese translation strategy of the nautical contracts,and offer some references to the translation circle as well as make some contribution to the fluent conduction of the nautical trade.
