| For the past few years, with the rocketing development of economy and foreign trade, the activities between China and foreign countries and organizations, like global shipping business, become more and more frequent, and the E-C translation of contract texts is of vital importance than ever before. However, the current E-C translation versions of shipping contracts are often distorted to some extent. In order to fulfill the function, protect the benefits of enterprises, and avoid any discrepancy between the contracts,a high quality of translation is both necessary and crucial. This paper studies the translating strategy of contract text under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s text typology theory. The contract text belongs to the informative text which possesses the informative function in accordance with Peter Newmark’s classification of text functions.Since the informative function is dominant, different methods should be adopted on a case-by-case basis when translating the contract text from English to Chinese.Specifically, the semantic translation strategy should be employed in the broad sense;in the narrow sense, the literal translation should be adopted as the main translation skill while flexible translation techniques, such as repetition, amplification, omission, the change of the voices, conversion, division, combination, restructuring, reversing, embedding, division, and recasting,as the subsidiary.Only by proper combination of the above translation methods, can renditions of high level and quality be produced. In view of the above theoretical analysis, this paper examines in detail how to translate English contracts of Standard Heavylift Charter Party at three levels, namely, the lexical level-adoption of archaic words, legal terms including legal terminologies and the common words with legal meanings, technical terms, synonyms and model verbs;the syntactic level-the transformation of sentence voice and word class, and the reorganization of attributive clauses, adverbial clauses as well as long and complex sentences;and the textual level-a brief analysis in terms of chapters. Finally, this paper gives a brief summary, emphasizes the author’s major findings, and points out some limitations and suggestions at the same time. |
