Appointed by UESTC's International Office and Discipline Construction and Development Office of Graduate School, this project “Translating University Vision,Mission,Motto,Strategy and Values” is committed to explore better linguistic presentation of university statements of mission, vision and development strategies.Undoubtedly,an appropriate declaration of a university's guidelines is an indispensable part to establish a higher international profile. It is clearly noted in the National Outline for Medium-and Long-Term Educational Reform and Development(2010-2020)issued by China's State Council that going abroad with good reputation is one of the goals that China's higher education aspires to.However,in the process of internationalization of "Double First-Class" construction, there are problems for some domestic universities because their English expressions of mission and vision statements are either improper or unclear. At this point, the author of this project first reads English source texts and Chinese parallel texts to analyze comprehensively the different linguistic features of English and Chinese texts, and then translates the concrete educational philosophy of university mission and vision statements, values and strategies from English to Chinese.Hopefully this project will on the one hand provide a reference for Chinese readers especially university students and faculty to transfer university guideline statements into English accurately, and on the other hand,as the focus of this translation report, give inspirations on optimal translation strategies and methods of informative, appellative and expressive texts for university guideline discourses. This translation is guided by text typology proposed by Katharina Reiss.According to different communicative functions of different text types, texts of this translation project are categorized into informative, appellative and expressive types. The report includes four parts: part one introduces the project background and research significance;Part Two introduces text typology theory, classifies and summarizes three text types of the vision, mission, values and strategies of the university, and analyzes the features of each type in detail;Part Three, the core chapter, presents the translation case analysis which will explore the suitable translation methods from lexical, syntactical and textual aspects based on comparisons of the first and final translations;and Part Four will give a conclusion of this project and demonstrate limitations and suggestions. After text analysis, practical translation and comparisons of two translation versions, this report concludes that liberal translation strategy is suitable for informative texts to convey information equivalence, imitation strategy is suitable for expressive texts to transfer the esthetic effect of the original text, and adaptation strategy is optimal for appellative texts to relay the same appealing effect.
