Strategies Of Consecutive Interpreting For Talk Shows

The material used in this practice report is Gary Vaynerchuck’s talk Genius,Innovation and How to Win in Business in a talk show of MSNBC.The entrepreneurship and digital marketing are discussed in the program.The author made a simulated consecutive interpreting,transcribed the interpreting record,and then analyzed the interpreting difficulties and coping strategies.This material,with strong randomness and immediacy,has the typical characteristics of talk shows.The dialogue between the host and the guest is full of redundancies,incomplete information and unclear logic patterns.The author categorizes the interpreting difficulties,namely information redundancy,fuzzy language and logic confusion of the source language.In light of Interpretive Theory,the author comes up with the methods of omission and simplification for contextual redundancy,and omission,simplification,amplification for semantic redundancies;the method of literal translation for semantic fuzzy language,and free translation for pragmatic fuzzy language;the methods of amplification for logic confusion at syntactic level,and amplification,omission,recombination for logic confusion at discourse level.The purpose of this essay is to provide interpreters with some effective coping tactics in talk show interpreting.Interpreters could properly distribute cognitive resource so as to improve the quality and accuracy of the interpreting.
